Rent allowance (huurtoeslag)

Huurtoeslag subsidises rent for lower incomes. The 2026 reform scrapped the hard maximum-rent limit, calculates on bare rent and ignores service costs — meaningfully more students qualify. The catch for students: shared rooms don't count, only self-contained units with own entrance, kitchen and toilet.
Who qualifies
- 18 or older, renting self-contained housing and registered at the address
- Income and assets within the (tapered) limits
- Typical shared student rooms are not eligible
How to apply
Apply on Mijn Toeslagen with your DigiD; retroactive until 1 September of the following year.

2026 reform: max-rent limit abolished, bare-rent basis, service costs excluded. Since 2025 full entitlement starts at 21 instead of 23.
